Director/Writer Barry Jenkins has crafted one of the most groundbreaking films of the year with his heart-wrenching story of Chiron, a young African American boy struggling to find his way growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. From the start, the odds are stacked against the boy, nicknamed “Little”. His single mother (Naomie Harris) is a crack addict and he’s continually bullied by classmates for being gay. Masterfully unfolding as a triptych, three different actors portray “Little” across three eras, with remarkable performances by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Travante Rhodes. Based on Tarrel Alvin McCraney’s play, “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue,” Jenkins has created a profound and intimate portrait -- and much needed conversation – about racial identity, sexuality, and masculinity that goes far beyond the usual stereotypes.
