Hoping to set a world record, two aviators take to the skies in a hot air balloon as ominous storm clouds swirl around them. The year is 1862 – there’s no fancy instruments or satellite communication to turn to for guidance. The adventurers are Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones), a widow whose husband lost his life in a similar situation, and James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne), a young scientist determined to become the world’s first meteorologist. Jones and Redmayne previously teamed up as Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Hawking in TheTheory of Everything. Despite the terrifying weather conditions, Glaisher pushes them to go higher and higher. As the temperature drops, severe frostbite sets in, and the air thins to dangerously low levels of oxygen. It falls to Amelia to scale the icy balloon and perform a death-defying maneuver in a last-ditch effort to bring them safely back to earth. Directed by Tom Harper (Wild Rose) and featuring spectacular special effects and cinematography, The Aeronauts is a thrilling ride you’ll be glad you’re experiencing from the ground.
